Exploring VT
Exploring the power of Making Thinking Visible with young children (1 year old and up)

Over the past few decades, education has been devoted to conquer knowledge through understanding. There is a growing awareness of the importance of encouraging higher thinking skills to seek out individual and collective learning. In this session, Presenters will share work done by children from four preschools in Florida as well as their experience implementing the Visible Thinking approach from Harvard University. Participants will explore the power of documentation, thinking routines and concept maps when making thinking visible in the classroom.

  • Creating a Culture of Learning in Early Childhood Settings

What is VT and Why Use It?
  • A look at what characterizes VT based on the findings of national and international research. We will identify the possible gains that can be made with the VT pedagogy and introduce you to some of the practical strategies of the approach.

How VT Looks and Feels Like in an Early Childhood Program

This session will focus on the practice of VT. All participants will actively participate in the use of thinking routines, Inquiry, and the methodology that VT uses to promote habits of mind. The workshop will be followed by a reflection period to give participants the opportunity to identify the key characteristics of VT and how to implement them.

Getting started in the implementation of Visible Thinking Approach from Harvard University with young children

Different approaches to getting started in VT will be shared. The Power of Documentation, Thinking Routines, and Thinking Ideals. Each could be your way to start. In Addition the benefits of each and relation to early childhood settings will be discussed during this session.

  • The Teacher is seen as a researcher, a facilitator and a model.
  • Tips and techniques will be offered to help teachers create a culture of learning for the 21st century within their classrooms by using the VT approach.
